Corian Countertop Repair. Greensboro NC

This is a Corian countertop repair in Greensboro North Carolina. There is a cracked cooktop cutout. This is a non dye lot match countertop repair.

As you can tell in the finished picture, the homeowners decided to get a new cooktop too. This was a good time for them to get one because I already had to remove the glass top cooktop that you see in the first picture. Too bad I forgot to take a picture with the nice new cooktop installed.

They were fortunate too because their new cooktop fit the same cutout without me having to do any alterations to it.

The repair came out great and the homeowners loved it. We were both incredibly happy with the non dye lot matching repair. I had prepared them for a repair that could be easily detected but we got and invisible repair instead.

Wilsonart Gibraltar Countertop Repair

Here is a repair that I recently did that is a Wilsonart Gibraltar countertop. This color is a discontinued color and it is the old formulation of Gibraltar which is a polyester blend. I forget exactly when they did it but Gibraltar changed over to an acrylic formulation that is much more reliable than the polyester.

I have always disliked the polyester tops but they have provided me with a ton of repair work over the years so I guess there is an upside to them, for me anyway.

The problem with repairing a discontinued countertop is trying to either find a place to "harvest" the material from in the kitchen or finding a fabricator that keeps material laying around for years and years in the hopes that one day he will actually be able to use the old stuff for something. Fortunately for these customers, I am that fabricator . I never throw any material away no matter how old it is, how ugly it is or what size it is, or what it is made of. You just never know when a 1" wide by 6" long piece of some discontinued color may just save the day.

This countertop cracked right at the corner of the wall and came forward. A crack like this offers up a special challenge to a repair man. Any time you are working within about 3 inches of the wall you can't really get a good cutting tool there. You either have to alter a router to make it be able to cut all to the wall or spend way too much money on a special router that is made just for that, or do some very precise free hand cutting with a Dremel tool.

On this one, I chose to try the precise free hand method first. Fortunately for me, that was the key to making this repair.

I have posted about odd dye lot, or non dye lot repairs before to show just how the repairs can turn out. I have to say, I am very pleased with this repair and the customer was ecstatic too because even though it is a non dye lot repair, the color was remarkably close and is not obvious without some very close scrutiny.

Odd dye lot repair

Having repair material on site that is the same dye lot as the countertop that is being repaired is the key to making the least detectable repairs possible. This material can be in the form of cutting boards or heat trivets that are made from your sink cutouts or stove cutouts. It may also be in the form of a piece of material that was left over from you original fabrication.

In the event that the homeowner doesn't have any dye lot matching material, a repair can still be made but it will have to be done out of a non dye lot match.

Often, the repair is still not very noticeable to a person that was unaware that the work had been performed. If however, someone did know the work had taken place they would be able to more easily detect the repair.

When doing a repair that is not a dye lot match it is important that the customer is informed ahead of time that the repair has a better chance of being detected than it otherwise would have.

If you are repairing a solid surface countertop that is acrylic, such as Corian or Wilsonart Gibraltar, as opposed to polyester, you tend to have a better color match with non dye lot repairs than you do with the polyester blends.

Often, a homeowner may have moved into a home that already had their tops installed and they do not know who the original fabricator was or what brand of material they have. It will be up to the experience of the repair technician to do some investigating in order to try and figure it out.

If the countertop has a color pattern it is easier to identify it. If it is a solid color such as bright white, off white, bone, or almond it can be a lot more difficult to determine exactly which brand it is.

Here are some examples of non dye lot repairs. The material pictured is polyester and not acrylic. Right now I do not have any photos of acrylic non dye lot photos.
