Solid Surface Countertop Repair. Lexington, NC

This is a solid surface countertop with a crack in the corner. It is nearly impossible to see this crack on this color of countertop but it is there and it is a big crack and a big problem.
Now that I have scratched it up and got a little dust in there the crack shows up quite nicely for my pics.
The customer was not provided any repair material in the form of cutting boards or trivets or sink cutouts or anything. In order to maintain a good dye lot match I had to take off the backsplash from this small top, use the backsplash to inlay into the cracked area, and then replace the backsplash with a piece that is so similar that you can't tell we had to do that. Of course, that is what we want.
Before.
After. Ooops. I left a little dust on the countertop. Solid Surface Countertop repair done in Lexington North Carolina by Complete Solid Surface Refinishing. AKA Countertop Repair Shop. Click here to contact.

Corian Countertop Repair. Rock Hill, South Carolina

This is a Corian countertop repair in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
A Realtor in the area, Judy Castorina with Reeves Realty and Associates, contacted me to repair this countertop. They had a buyer but only if the countertops and a few other things were repaired or replaced. They did not want the expense of replacing the topss and they hoped I could help them.

The cooktop cutout has a major, two directional crack in the corner and a straight crack just to the right of the cooktop.

Now that I have the cooktop out of there, we can get access to the area and start on the repair.

The homeowners did not have any DYE LOT MATCHING material so we had to harvest it from the backsplash on the smallest top.

Here is the cooktop after the crack repair. Just like brand new.

The backsplash has been replaced on the small top, and I also did a refinish on the rest of the countertops and replaced the caulk around the cast iron drop in sink and backsplash. The countertop had tons of little pokes from a knife or something. They all came out in the refinish process.

Countertop Modification, Alteration and Crack Repair

This is a countertop modification, alteration to resolve the issue of a cracked countertop around the cooktop. Actually, the material is not Corian, it is old Surrell. The homeowner did not have any cutting boards or other Surrell material for me to use for the crack repair. Since you can no longer get Surrell material we had to get a little bit creative with this one.

The homeowner decided that since she had white tile for the backsplash, maybe it would be a good look to just outline the cooktop with a white border. So I did that. She loved the finished result and I was quite pleased with how it came out too.

There isn't a whole lot to say about the job. I will just let these pics do most of the talking for me today.

Cornerstone Countertop Repair. Greensboro NC Part 2

Well, here are some pics that will clearly show the cracks in this Cornerstone countertop. The "invisible" cracks show quite clearly when you scratch the countertop with sandpaper and get the dust smeared into and around the cracked area. The following two pictures show the same corner with 2 cracks coming from it. This is the left corner of the kitchen.

The picture below show the right side of the kitchen with another big, mean Crock Pot caused crack.

As always, here are the finished pictures. Naturally, you can no longer see the cracks in the countertop because they are no longer cracked.

Cornerstone Countertop Repair. Greensboro NC

These folks have a Cornerstone countertop that has been severely cracked in 3 places by the use of a Crock pot. (I know, why did it take 3 cracks before they stopped using the Crock Pot?) Would you believe, 2 of the cracks fixed themselves?

Of course they did not really fix themselves. There is a neat little thing that happens with a lot of these solid surface countertop cracks that many of my customers over the years have told me about. They hear the countertop crack, usually described to me as a gunshot sound, but they are not sure where the sound came from. They walk around the house and look for anything that may have fallen over or something. After being unable to find anything they quit looking.

Typically, a few hours later or in some cases even days, they may be wiping down the countertops and they find the crack because they can feel it, even though the speckled countertop pattern hides the crack from sight. Unless of course it is a gapping crack that you can see into.

Both of these pictures show the countertop with the cracks in them. Look closely, can you see the cracks?

I'm short on time right now so I will finish this post later. Be sure and check back or subscribe to the blog (top left column). Part 2 of this article can be found here http://cssrblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/cornerstone-countertop-repair.html

Countertop Repair. This Is Why You Need A Specialist.

You find out that you have a crack in your solid surface countertop. Naturally, you want to find someone to fix the crack for you. You call all over the place looking to find someone to fix the crack and you discover that this is not the kind of job that most handymen and local contractors will take on for you.

Eventually you start calling around to solid surface countertop fabricators and you discover that most of them are not interested in sending one of their fabricators out to help you either. Why is that?

Here are a couple of reasons why this happens.

  • Most fabricator shops have a large overhead and lots of new fabrication and installation to get to. This is what pays their bills. If they have a guy in the shop that is generating $1000.00 a day in revenue for them by fabricating, they probably will not want to take him out of the shop to do a repair for $400-$500.

  • A lot of fabrication shops have great fabricators that can build magnificent countertops practically in their sleep. However, they may scratch their head in bewilderment at the thought of doing a countertop crack repair on a countertop that is already installed in your home.

    1. Now, you may find someone that says they can fix the crack for you but that is not what they do on a regular basis. Everybody has to start somewhere but do you really want someone to use your kitchen as their training ground to develop their skills?

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying that they are trying to get one over on you or anything like that. In fact, they may be very well intentioned and only be trying to help you. But, when it comes to your substantial investment in your countertops, you don't care about good intentions. You care about good results. This is why you need a countertop repair specialist to repair your solid surface countertops.

Here is a perfect example of a bad solid surface countertop repair. Not only is it ugly, it did not hold for very long. Notice the different color stripe and the squiggly crack that is coming right off of the repair strip.

The reason there is a different color stripe is because whoever repaired it used the wrong color material. Not just a different dye lot, a whole other color of white. I do have to admit, sometimes matching white material when there is none left by the original fabricator can prove to be very tricky. That is why you need a countertop repair specialist. They can figure these things out ahead of time and usually prevent these types of results from happening.

Fortunately, these homeowners were able to find Complete Solid Surface Refinishing to come and make the new repair. That is all we do. Solid surface countertop repair. Nothing else. We were able to get to the bottom of the color match delema and make a great repair for them.

At the time of repair, I had not been out to their home before. They told me basically what they had over the phone and I showed up with several shades of white solid surface to make the repair. Guess what. Out of all the material that I brought with me, not one single piece of it was a match. Did I go ahead and make the repair with the wrong color? Of course not.

They a seperate desk top in their kitchen that was made from the same material. Their main countertop had a tile backsplash which was no help to us. However, their desk top had a backsplash that was made from the same solid surface material. I was able to remove the sidesplash from the wall and "harvest" that material for the repair.

      Here is the end result.

The customers were very happy with the results and I was very happy to help.

Solid Surface Countertop Repair. Cooktop Cutout Crack Repair

This is known as a cooktop cutout crack repair. The countertop has cracked in two places around the area that has the electric cooktop installed. This material is Cornerstone. They are no longer on the market and the material is no longer available. Fortunatley, the homeowner had a good fabricator that provided her with the proper heat trivettes and cutting boards made from her cooktop cutout so we were able to do a great looking repair.

There is still a little bow in the very front of the cooktop area that we had to leave in there because we were limited on the amount of material to work with. If material had been readily available we could have done an on site refabrication of the front section but for this we had to concentrate on just repairing the cracks.

Once again, some of my photos look like those old blurry Bigfoot pictures. Sorry.

Here is the countertop after the repairs have been completed.
