Replacing Integral Avonite Sink With A Top Mount Stainless Steel Sink in Salisbury NC

                                                                                 
  This sink has a lot of staining in it and needs to be replaced.  It is a discontinued Avonite model sink so simply removing it and replacing with the same one again is not an option.  Without another option they will have to replace all of the countertops in the kitchen as well as the sink of course.  That would be at least a $5000.00 project in this kitchen.  I am the other option.

                                                                                                                                                                     In a very unusual occurrence, I actually did not have to cut this sink out of the countertop.  I noticed that there was a small void (tiny hole where there is no adhesive) where the countertop and the sink meet.  I was curious as to whether or not this was beginning to seperate from the countertop so I gave it a small tap with the rubber handle on my hammer and it was obvious that this sink was on the way out one way or the other.  I removed the entire sink with no power tools at all.  In the 20 years that I have been doing this I have never seen that!

  You can see here where there is a lot of molding in the area where the glue void was.  Water was able to get in between the sink and the countertop causing the mold on the inside of the cabinet.  Normally this is not an issue with this type of sink but it was on this one.

   We are replacing the Avonite sink with a top mount 33 x 22 stainless steel zero radius sink.  Here is where it gets a little tricky.  A lot.

  The sink I just removed was 33" from wall to wall.  The new sink is 33" from lip to lip (left to right).  Once the sink is removed, there is a 3/8" radius on the sink cut out.  This adds 3/4" more area that needs to be covered by the new sink. Notice the gap in the picture above.  Since I left my stainless steel sink stretcher at home today I will have to shrink the cutout rather than stretching the sink!

  While I am doing the sink cut out shrink process I will also be plugging that extra hole in the countertop to the right of the sink.

                                                 

 I had a lot of work to do and did not document a good portion of the process but here you can see that I have added material to the sides and have plugged the hole in the countertop.  Next I re cut the sink cutout to accept the installation of the new sink.

 Now the new sink is installed and the extra hole is plugged.  The plumber will be by in the morning.

Replace Undermount Cornerstone Sink With A Drop In Stainless Steel Sink

This is a Cornerstone integral sink. It has been badly damaged and the homeowner would like to replace it with a stainless steel drop in sink. They were a little concerned about doing a drop in sink because they have a drain board that is cut into the Cornerstone countertop.

One of the main concerns was, water leaking from the drain board and going underneath the sink. The other concern was the appearance. They did not want it to look like an afterthought or a mistake. Obviously I did not want that either.


Here is the finished product. The homeowner loved it and we did a water spill test to ensure that the sink was properly sealed at the drain board area.
